WhatsApp chatbot for businesses in Tunisia: the guide

In Tunisia, many customers send a WhatsApp message before they call or visit a website. A chatbot can answer part of these messages, provided it is built well.

In short

A WhatsApp chatbot is a program that automatically answers the messages a business receives on its WhatsApp number. For a real chatbot connected to your tools, you need Meta's WhatsApp Business API, since the free WhatsApp Business app only offers simple automatic replies. An AI-based chatbot understands open questions in Arabic, French and written Tunisian dialect, and hands over to a person when it does not know.

What is a WhatsApp chatbot for a business?

A WhatsApp chatbot is a program connected to your business WhatsApp number that reads incoming messages and answers them without human intervention.

It can be very simple, with a menu of choices (“type 1 for opening hours”), or more advanced, able to understand a question asked freely: “do you have size 42 in black, delivered to Sousse?”. In both cases it works at any hour and answers within seconds.

It does not replace your team. It takes care of repetitive questions (listed prices, opening hours, address, order tracking) and leaves people the requests that call for judgement.

Chatbot or AI agent: what is the difference?

A classic chatbot follows a script written in advance, while an AI agent understands the request and can act in your tools.

A scripted chatbot is predictable and easy to validate, but it gets stuck as soon as the customer leaves the menu. An AI agent relies on a language model: it understands a misspelled sentence or a mix of Arabic and French, then checks your data (stock, catalogue, appointments) and carries out a defined action, such as creating an order.

An AI agent needs more care: answers limited to your information, a log of its actions, human approval for anything sensitive. For a small volume of questions that are always the same, a simple script is often enough.

WhatsApp Business app or API: which one do you need?

The WhatsApp Business app is enough for a small shop; the API becomes necessary as soon as you want to automate or connect WhatsApp to your tools.

The free app offers a business profile, a catalogue, quick replies, a greeting message and an away message. It runs on one phone and a limited number of linked devices.

The WhatsApp Business API, provided by Meta, has no interface of its own: it is connected to software, a CRM or a chatbot. It lets you reply automatically, have several people work on the same number and send order notifications. Some messages are charged by Meta.

The two do not always exclude each other: depending on the setup Meta offers, a number can stay usable in the app while being connected to the API. The available option has to be checked number by number.

What can a WhatsApp chatbot do for a Tunisian business?

A WhatsApp chatbot can handle most of the repetitive exchanges with your customers.

  • Answer questions about products, sizes, stock and delivery times
  • Take an order with cash on delivery and confirm the address
  • Give the status of an order from its number
  • Book or change an appointment for a clinic, a salon or a garage
  • Qualify a quote request before passing it to a salesperson
  • Send an appointment confirmation or reminder

All of this in Arabic, in French or in the dialect your customers actually use.

How does a WhatsApp chatbot project run?

A serious project starts with your real messages, not with the technology.

We read a sample of recent conversations to spot the questions that keep coming back. We then decide what the chatbot handles on its own and what it passes to a person. Next comes the API setup (Meta account, business verification, number), then the connection to your data.

The chatbot is tested on real messages before it is opened to customers, first on part of the traffic. After launch, we reread the conversations, fix weak answers and add the missing cases.

Frequently asked questions

Your other questions.

Does the chatbot understand Tunisian dialect?

Current AI models understand Arabic and French well, and written dialect in Arabic or Latin letters fairly well. We check this on your own messages before going live.

Can I keep my current WhatsApp number?

Depending on the setup Meta offers, the number can stay usable in the WhatsApp Business app alongside the API, or move to the API only. We check the option available for your number before any migration.

Can the customer talk to a real person?

Yes, and it is essential. The chatbot hands the conversation to a team member when the customer asks for it, when the question falls outside its scope or when it is unsure.

Do I need a website to have a WhatsApp chatbot?

Not necessarily. Meta may however ask to verify your business, and a website or official documents make that step easier.
